Judging Poets: Tennyson's Science, Browning's Music
Huxley's literary opinions appear in letters and reminiscences. He calls Tennyson 'the only modern poet' since Lucretius 'who has taken the trouble to understand the work and tendency of the men of science,' citing In Memoriam's insight into scientific method. Yet he also praises Tennyson's 'Doric beauty' of talk and ranks him as 'the greatest English master of melody except Spenser and Keats.' Of Browning, Huxley notes that 'He really has music in him,' quoting Tennyson's own remark.
